Facebook Holding Company Transforms to “Meta”, raising Eyebrows

Written by on November 4, 2021

In a move that sent shockwaves across the Tech world, international tech giant, Facebook, on Thursday officially changed their company name to “Meta”

The move was announced by Facebook founder, CEO and international Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg created the social media website while still a student of Havard back in February , 2004, naming it “TheFacebook”. From then the company eventually transformed into “Facebook”, becoming the global conglomerate tech giant that owns multiple other companies such as WhatsApp and Instagram which it acquired along the way and is now worth a total of one trillion US Dollars.

The rebrand only applies to the holding company name from that point on. This entails that the company products, services and apps, such as Facebook, WhatsApp etc shall not in any way be affected by this change and will infact retain their brand names.

“Together, we can finally put people at the center of our Technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy. To reflect who we are and what we hope to build” Explained Mr. Zuckerberg.

The Facebook CEO illustrated that the previous name, that is , Facebook, doesn’t fully encompass everything the company does now and is still closely linked to one product hence opting for a name that can accommodate all of the company’s facilities at the moment.

“I hope we are seen as a meterverse company” an excited Zuckerberg concluded.

At the moment, the website meta.org redirects you to the Facebook homepage outlining the changes the company is taking on including a change of the logo from the traditional lowercase white “f” on a royal blue background to a blue horizontal kind of infinity sign with a few adjustments.

However, analysts and business experts believe that the massive rebranding might have been inspired by far more pressing push factors. Many have pointed out the companies numerous public scandles over the past couple of years and believe the rebrand is an attempt to start a fresh and dump the already tainted Facebook image, embodied by it’s former logo.

In 2018 Facebook was part of a scandles as they were found out to have leaked user’s data to a company known as Cambridge Analytical which in turn aided Donald Trump’s Election. Facebook was also ensued in court battles against the European Union around the same time as they were accused of infringement of European privacy laws. There have been reports by whistle blowers of segregation according to political or social views within the ranks of the company. The social media network has been banned in some countries such as Uganda on accusation of fueling political agenda and of course the recent leak of multiple incriminating documents from within the company which have famously now come to be known as ” The Facebook Files” which paint the company in very undesirable light. In addition to the above, many other scandles taint the Facebook name.

With all this in mind, it’s easy to understand why some people point at Facebook’s long scadal list as reason to rebrand so aggressively.
