Taxi operators in Kampala under their association’s umbrella Taxi Operators Federation have embarked on registering themselves as a way of streamlining their industry through issuing identification cards and uniforms.
The exercise looks at capturing most important details from the taxi operators in the Kampala metropolitan area, among the specifics needed include, name, stage, National Identification Number, driving license number and others .
According to Rashid Ssekindi the president of Taxi Operators Federation, they want to avoid the shocks of the government through Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) if they announce the process of registering them (taxi operators) when they are not ready.
Ssekindi cited the example of Boda Boda operators in Kampala who were ambushed to start registering them. Ssekindi reasons that for them they are going to do it themselves before KCCA to avoid inconveniences and panic.
This comes when on Tuesday, the Prime Minister of Uganda Robinnah Nabbanja launched the registration exercise of Boda Boda operators in Kampala, at ceremony that was graced by over thirty thousand (30,000) operators, Nabanja revealed that the government is determined to wipe away criminals in the transport sector of Uganda.
At the function, Minister of Works and Transport Katumba Wamala confirmed that they wrote to the ministry of Finance to cut the cost of driving licenses or permits for Boda Bodas by half across the country pending introducing the motion to parliament and be passed.
