Local Defense Unit-LDU personnel have thumped the Mityana LC 5 Chairperson, Joseph Luzige. Eye witnesses say four LDUs roughed up Luzige on Tuesday evening when he confronted them for beating up a woman who was riding on a motorcycle past curfew time.
“When the cyclist rammed into the LDUs who were patrolling Mityana town they waved a stick trying to beat him together with the woman he was carrying. The woman jumped off the Boda boda and sustained serious injuries,” the eyewitness said.
Adding that, “It is at this time that Luzige tried to intervene and ended up drawing the wrath of the LDUs. According to the witness, the LDUs boxed the LC V chairperson while pointing their guns at him.
They were later joined by a police man before they whisked off Luzige towards Mityana Central police station. Some residents witnessed the incident and captured it on their mobile phones.
It took the intervention of Mityana Resident District Commissioner, Isha Ntumwa to order Luzige’s release.
Ntumwa says the LDU who assaulted Luzige has been arrested and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Ntumwa has condemned the LDUs for using excessive force, saying that such unpleasant acts will not be tolerated.
The First Division Spokesperson Maj. Bilal Yusuf Katamba, who also speaks for the LDUs, has confirmed the incident, saying the LDU operative has been disarmed as demanded by Luzige as they devise means of taking administrative measures.
Luzige hasn’t yet commented as he couldn’t pick reported calls from URN. Luzige isn’t the first prominent person to be roughed up by LDUs enforcing curfew.
