Parliamentarily News Update

Last week, Parliament approved 8 loans worth UGX9.755Trn, and a grant worth US$328.3Million (UGX1.146Trn) from the World Bank amidst concerns on the scrutiny given to the loan proposals and the growing national debt. One of the loans approved was the Euro 230,454,687.23 (UGX925,942,290,000) to finance design and build of the Jinja-Mbulamuti-Kamuli-Bukungu road (127KM), and Jinja City Roads (10KM). Parliament also approved a US$121,961,000 (UGX425,785,010,000) loan from the African Development Bank for the construction of the South Sudan - Uganda Power Interconnection Project, which loan attracted the most debate from MPs who queried the rationale behind Government extending power to South Sudan, yet the State has failed to extend power to many parts of the country.
