MUK Guild Elections Called Off After Death of A Student.

Security beefed up at Makerere University after the University council overnight canceled the would be today’s Varsity guild president polls.

This followed the death of a student identified as Betungura Bewatte. Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire confirmed the incident and confirmed the arrest of Kassanda South MP Hon.Kabuye Frank, Ssekidde Allan and Kaburwa Muzafaru in regards to the same.

“It is alleged that during the campaigns a scuffle ensued between two Political party supporters that resulted in the stabbing of the deceased by students who were allegedly led by Hon. Kabuye Frank among others. The Police were informed and upon reaching the scene we found blood stains believed to be for the deceased inside Nsibirwa Hall where he hid there after the scuffle that led to his stabbing.” Said Luke

Betungura Bewatte lying helpless at University Hospital

Sources at the university say the deceased was cut with a broken bottle on the neck which led to his over  bleeding. It is alleged that the scuffle began when FDC supporters entered the Rugby playground where he NUP were holding their final campaign rally and the two sides started throwing stuff at each other.

 

The student after allegedly being stabbed ran to the bathroom to try and wash off the blood and it’s here that he ran unconscious from. He was rushed to university hospital from where he was announced dead.

 

 

The exercise is to see the University getting the 88th guild president and stiff competition is between National Unity Platform’s Lawrence Alionzi and Forum for Democratic Change’s Tukamushaba though 18 contestants are in the race.

 

 

Betungura was a Uganda Christian University law student who had come to campaign for the FDC candidate according to FDC’s Doreen Nyanjura.
