Speaking to Record FM a day ago, the reigning Miss Uganda 2020/2021, Elizabeth Bagaya showed optimism to express her confidence at the 70th Miss World Pageant.
She is hopeful to bring the Miss World crown home at the event that will be hosted at José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico on December 16 2021.
According to the current ranking pages that always follow up on the contestants to know how much a contestant is working, and thereby rank, Bagaya is among the top contenders for Miss World Africa.
“I have been very fortunate that I have grown into the Miss Uganda position because I was Miss Uganda first runners up in 2019. It has boosted my confidence. I’m imagining two years ago if I was in Miss World, I would be shaking. But now I am much more confident, have grown into my title and the pageant world. I have even worked more with my ‘Beauty with a purpose’ which is mental health. That gives me more credit as Miss Uganda. I am 100% blessed because I have been able to see what other countries are doing and take my time,” Bagaya told Record FM.
Hailing from Tooro, Bagaya is a 26 year old holder of Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management and a make-up artist by profession. Bagaya was formerly the first runner up in the 2019/2020 Miss Uganda Beauty Pageant that saw Nakakande walk away with the crown. She also was Miss Photogenic in the 2019/2020 contest.
When Oliver Nakakande opted to go for her studies in Dubai, Bagaya got the nod and was appointed as Miss Uganda 2020/21. Her appointment too, brought up Mariam Nyamatte, who was the second runner up as the first runner up while Petronella Acen, who is also the Miss Uganda North became the second runner up.
She runs the Bagaya Elizabeth Foundation that helps to extend financial and mental support to children at Butabika Hospital. She has been offered a send-off trip to different tourism destinations in the western side of Uganda as she heads to Puerto Rico for the Miss World beauty pageant in December 2021.
Uganda has previously been represented at the Miss World Beauty Pageant stage by former Miss Uganda queens like Quiin Abenakyo (2018/19), Barbara Kimbugwe (2004/05), Juliet Akankwatsa (2005/06), Sylvia Namutebi (2011/12) and Oliver Nakakande (2019/21).
Abenakyo emerged 5th overall and 1st in Africa in the 2018 Pageant. Nakakande became the first Ugandan Miss World representative to qualify for 3 Miss World categories at the same time; Top model, Sports queen, Head to head challenge and also featured on the top cover of the Miss World 69th Final London magazine.
